10 of Hearts - Your Food's Journey to Poo

After you take a bite of food, it goes into your digestive system, gets processed in your body,

it uses what it needs and then the rest comes out as poo!

A cute art of kids in the toilet

There’s no such thing as a perfect poo – it comes in all shapes and sizes, colours and textures.

It’ll probably be different every time you go because your poo reflects what you’ve eaten lately.

Follow this guide to find out more about what might be missing from your diet.

After you eat, it takes about 6-8 hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine.

Food then enters your large intestine (colon) for further digestion, absorption of water and, finally, elimination of undigested food. It takes about 36 hours for food to move through the entire colon (reference).

  • Having a school policy to approach toileting that meets all children’s needs;
  • If a child has particular toileting issues provide them with an individual plan or ‘toilet card’ that allows them to go to the toilet whenever needed;
  • Ensuring that pressure is not placed on parents or carers over their child’s toileting issues (reference).
  • Think about foods rich in fibre that aid your child’s digestion.
  • Eating fibre-rich foods such as legumes, vegetables, and grains may help promote healthy, regular bowel movements for your child.
  • Establish a routine or regular times for bathroom breaks to build a healthy habit of going to the toilet;
  • Be patient! Every child is different and their food to toilet journey will vary;
  • Use positive reinforcement with correct foods and using the toilet to increase their confidence and willingness to create a healthy habit (reference).
