What is it?

Sleeping is cool! Try setting your thermostat to 16-18C tonight. Lower temperatures can promote natural melatonin production.

Why might this happen?

Your body’s core temperature naturally drops as you prepare for sleep. Metabolism slows, along with heart rate and blood pressure. This is one of your body’s circadian rhythms. A cooler room can help facilitate this cool-down by increasing melatonin production, making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep. If your environment is too warm, it can disrupt this natural cooling process, leading to restlessness and difficulty falling asleep.

Not only is it easier to fall and stay asleep, but some studies have shown that sleeping in a cooler room increases the amount of deep sleep subjects obtain (Gilbert et al., 2004).

If you’ve never tried sleeping in a cool room before, you may find that it feels more comfortable, especially when you’re bundled up in blankets. Try it out! Individual preferences for sleeping temperature may vary, so why not experiment to find the temperature that works best for you?
