What is it?

Personality testing and assessment refer to methods invented to measure the characteristic patterns of traits people demonstrate across various situations (Cherry 2023).

Personality testing is designed to stimulate responses from participants about their behaviours, preferences, emotional reactions, connections, and motivations to evaluate personality characteristics and patterns. The two basic types of personality tests are self-report inventories and projective tests. Self-report inventories are tests where a person reads questions and then rates on a scale how well the question or statement applies to their situation. The other type is Projective tests which provide a person taking the test with an indistinct scene, object, or scenario and then is prompted to give their interpretation of the test item (Cherry 2024).

Why do it?

Taking a personality test and reviewing our results helps us gain a better understanding of all the different observations and responses other people may have to the same situation. Fundamentally, this becomes important since we all have different ways of interpreting and interacting with the world. There is no best personality type among all types instead they are just different. Thus, every single individual perspective offers something new, interesting, and important to a situation or group (Cherry 2023).

Personality tests have many reasons why they might be taken. These types of tests can help a person learn more about oneself and enhance understanding of an individual’s own strengths and weaknesses. All personality tests assess for different aspects or traits, however, after taking a test discovering one might lean heavily towards a certain specific trait can assist a person to gain clearer insight into their own behavioral patterns and allow for personal growth (Cherry 2024).

What’s the science behind it?

Scientifically, there are many different types of personality tests which can help specify a clinical diagnosis, direct therapeutic treatments, and may help predict people’s behavioural responses during different situations. Personality tests are administered for a range of different purposes. These include assessing psychological theories, evaluating the effectiveness of therapy, diagnosing psychological problems, measuring changes in personality, and screening suitable job candidates or for occupational testing. (Cherry 2024).

Small changes CAN make a big difference – that’s what The 1% Club is all about.
